Several Lobster Behavioral Adaptations
Displayed in Their Habitat
Before we can learn about the lobster behavioral adaptations, then it is better
when we learn about their habitat first. Especially since their behavioral adaptations
are done because of their habitat and environment situations. For the most
common types of lobster that we mention above, they are living in the Atlantic
Ocean habitat. But actually you can also find different lobster in different
habitat for example on the tropical habitat. However, they will be going under
different variety which most people called as slipper lobster as well as spiny
lobster.
When it comes to their behavior, you need
to know that this lobster is actually very close relative on crabs and also
shrimps which are also crustacean. Thus the lobster
behavioral adaptations are also quite similar with the other crustacean
behavior. This can be seen in their chosen living area which located on the
bottom ocean part. This behavior is done since the bottom area has a lot of
hideout that can protect the lobster from any predators. Furthermore in this
area, there are also abundant food source that they can feed on.
Another thing that forces them to have this
behavior is because their eyesight itself is very poor, thus they cannot see
very well. To cope with this problem, then they already done some change in
their body as an adaptations behavior which is to make the other senses become
better. This is why; the lobster develops their taste and smell sense better
than other so it become more advanced. Using this adaptation, then they can
still find food by themselves which mostly consist of small fish as well as
mollusk. But sometimes they will also feed on various plants that they can find
in the ocean as well as the algae.
Other lobster behavioral adaptations that
they do are on their living environment choice. They usually choose to live in
area where it is colder with plenty of rocks as shelter as you can find in the
North America especially on the Atlantic Ocean. In this area, the deep is range
from 164 feet until 2,296 feet. But of course, you can still find lobster in
any area in this world. Because of their behavioral adaptation, sometimes they
will also live in area with brackish and even fresh water.
Back to the American lobster behavioral
adaptations which are done in their habitat. They will usually live in area
spreads on the Atlantic coast that is still located in the North America
region. This region will stretch from the Labrador area that is located on the
northern area then go to the Cape Hatteras that is located on the North
Carolina which actually on the southern part of the area. But actually the
lobster habitat is not commonly found in the southern area of New Jersey. Then
again on different area such as Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina as well as
Virginia, the population of lobster that can be found is on 0.1 percentages.
The lobster
behavioral adaptations are also shown from the lobster is still small as
they will hide in a habitat which consists of rocks. A unique behavioral
adaptation that they do is to use their claw first when they found a new hole
in the rock that they can take as hideout. This unique behavior is done so they
can ensure no creatures which currently hide inside the hole which may be
dangerous for them. This behavior is also done so they can remove the creature
inside the hole then they will take the hole for them to hide from danger. Once
the hole is empty, then they also show another unique behavior which is to put
their back first into the hole. With this position, then their claws will be on
the mouth of the hole. Thus they will be able to defend themselves whenever
there are predators that try to approach the hole. Furthermore this position
will also allow them to grab any fish that come close to their hole easier.
Thus this means they are still be able to feed without having to leave the safe
of their hole.
Other noticeable lobster
behavioral adaptations that they do are to hide for most of their live
inside the hole since it will protect them from the predators. Especially when
they are younger since they are still small thus they are more vulnerable with
the predators thus they need to find place to hide as fast as they can. This is
why; they sometimes develop behavior to hide in any area that they can found
such as pebbles, sand and also mud. Then they will dig a hole in that area
which will protect them for years until they become big. Once they become big,
then they would be able to fight most of the predators that comes near them. That
is when they move around more to find better shelter and food.
That is why you can notice that the larger
size lobster display behavior to mobile more than the smaller size lobster. Most
of the time, the lobster will stay in deep ocean since it is the habitat where
they adapt better. But the larger size lobster also show migration lobster behavioral adaptations where
they move into warmer water area. This behavior is seasonal and they will do it
little by little since they cannot travel fast thus they will take a long time
to move around.
